Stefania Pia

La Vera "Hustler"

I am Stefania Pia a 38 year old multi-media artist who started an indie magazine in Italy before moving to New York City in 2007. Since then I have used my creative spirit as an accessories designer, art director for thecools.com and freelance editorial contributor for vogue.it with a serious passion for music that lead me to dj at the now legendary Paul’s Baby Grand.

What do you do in your life (work and fun)?

In my free time I love sourcing vintage remnants to use for my one-of-a-kind jewelry and collages, watching vintage romantic films and looking for new music to help people dream, dance and have fun. I also love to cook and have a weakness for macrobiotic foods.

What made you leave Italy and chose NYC?

I published the magazine pellenoleather for more then 2 years in Milan and after that I felt New York was a natural consequence of my journey. To me, New York represents limitless passion, freedom and energy. Maybe it’s not the center of the universe, but for me it rings true as a very special place that not only inspires me, but also pushes me to continue to be creative in many aspects. And as you can see, my resume and many various accomplishments work to reinforce the capabilities the city has to offer.

Please share your best memory in the City.

I have so many……. mostly attached to places… now gone like Beatrice Inn that closed in 2008! That was my favorite place on earth for a while.. But also meeting other creative people that I have long respected such as Roxanne Lowitt, Grace Jones and so many more.

What made you choose this specific location and outfit?

This is the roof of my East Village studio and i love it cause its all silver and works as a quiet place to reflect high in the sky.

Your thought about this project, ITALIANY.US

very proud to be part of it ! the italians rock!!

How would you describe being an ambassador of the italian style/culture abroad?

Italy is in my blood, I never stop talking about Italy – the food, the culture, the traditions… my memories…. one year ago I started to dj at Paul’s Baby Grand where I play mostly italian-europian oldies that work as cherished tunes that people in NYC have never heard… I love when American kids dance to my favorite singer, Mina
